On Friday February 21st, the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) Model United Nations club held its second annual in-school simulation, bringing together 60 students for an immersive diplomatic experience. The event, designed to enhance students’ public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking skills, featured two engaging committees tackling pressing global issues.
The first committee focused on the G20’s environmental sustainability goals, with delegates representing major world economies to debate strategies for reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and balancing economic growth with ecological responsibility. Through rigorous discussions, delegates explored policy proposals that reflected real-world concerns, fostering an understanding of international cooperation in combating climate change.
Meanwhile, the second committee simulated the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), where delegates grappled with the contentious issue of China’s proposal for an extradition treaty with Hong Kong. Delegates representing global powers such as the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Russia debated the treaty’s implications on sovereignty, human rights, and international law. The discussion highlighted the complexities of balancing national security with individual freedoms, offering students a firsthand look at the challenges faced by global policymakers.
This in-school simulation is just one of many events that the AITE Model UN club runs and participates in throughout the year. In two weeks, 16 members will travel to New York City to attend the prestigious National High School Model UN conference, where they will collaborate with students from all over the world. The conference will provide them with the opportunity to engage in high-level debates, refine their diplomatic skills, and broaden their global perspectives.
