On March 18th, thirteen students from the Model United Nations (MUN) club left for a 4-day, overnight field trip to the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) conference in Midtown Manhattan, NYC. During the conference, students took part in intense negotiations, delivered speeches in front of hundreds of students from around the world, and created resolutions on major global issues.
Throughout the conference, students were challenged to think critically, speak confidently, and work collaboratively. They took part in committee sessions that spanned across 3 days where they debated international issues and negotiated with other delegates. Each committee focused on different topics, requiring each delegation to write a position paper, a paper about a country’s stance on a topic, and research thoroughly before the conference. They had to defend their countries position and cooperate with other delegations to draft detailed resolutions
Not only that, students also had the opportunity to listen to a speech given by Mitt Romney, former United States Senator and presidential candidate in 2012 against Barack Obama. He talked about his dilemmas when in office as a senator, and passed on advice to the younger generation, emphasizing the importance of young, educated leaders.
The experience was demanding but rewarding. Students had to speak, problem solve, and collaborate in a fast paced environment that closely mirrors the environment of the United Nations. Beyond the committees, the conference gave students the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, hear different perspectives, and build connections with other young leaders.
For the thirteen students who attended, it was more than just a conference for them. It was a chance to grow as speakers, negotiators, and students whilst representing their school on an international stage. Thanks to NHSMUN for an amazing conference and trip that we will never forget!
